Gukesh, an 18-year-old prodigy from Chennai, became the youngest World Chess Champion on 12th December 2024, defeating China's Ding Liren. Gukesh is the third Asian to hold this title after his mentor Viswanathan Anand and Ding. His victory came after a hard-fought 14-game match, making him the 18th World Champion in chess history.
