Why in News? 

It is celebrated every year on 4th February, focuses on raising awareness about cancer while advocating for its prevention, early detection and effective treatment. 

  • Theme: United by Unique 
  •  History 
    • Originated from the World Summit Against Cancer held in Paris on 4 February 1999. 
    • Led to the signing of the Charter of Paris Against Cancer and the first World Cancer Day on 4 February 2000. 
    • Established to unite global efforts in cancer prevention, care and research. 
  •  Types of Cancer 
    • Carcinoma: Affects skin or internal organ linings (e.g., lung, breast). 
    • Sarcoma: Develops in bones, muscles, or connective tissues. 
    • Leukemia: Starts in bone marrow, affecting blood cells. 
    • Lymphoma: Affects the lymphatic system (e.g., lymph nodes). 
    • Melanoma: Cancer of pigment-producing cells in the skin. 
    • CNS Cancers: Occurs in the brain or spinal cord.
