Why in the News?

India has been chosen to chair the 68th Session of the UNCND for the first time, marking a significant milestone in its role in international drug control efforts.

About UNCND

  • Origin: Established in 1946 by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
    • Created to assist in supervising and implementing international drug control treaties.
  • Membership: Comprises 53 member states elected by ECOSOC.
  • Functions:
    • Acts as the governing body of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
    • Develops strategies and frameworks to combat drug-related issues globally.
  • Mandate:
    • Reviews and analyzes the global drug situation.
    • Focuses on both supply reduction (drug control measures) and demand reduction (awareness and rehabilitation programs).
