Why in the News?
India has been chosen to chair the 68th Session of the UNCND for the first time, marking a significant milestone in its role in international drug control efforts.
About UNCND
- Origin: Established in 1946 by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
- Created to assist in supervising and implementing international drug control treaties.
- Membership: Comprises 53 member states elected by ECOSOC.
- Functions:
- Acts as the governing body of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
- Develops strategies and frameworks to combat drug-related issues globally.
- Mandate:
- Reviews and analyzes the global drug situation.
- Focuses on both supply reduction (drug control measures) and demand reduction (awareness and rehabilitation programs).
