Why in the News?
The Indian government recently launched the ‘Animal Health Security Strengthening in India for Pandemic Preparedness and Response initiative’. This project, backed by the Pandemic Fund, was introduced by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh on 25th October 2024 to enhance India’s ability to manage animal health threats and prevent potential zoonotic diseases from sparking future pandemics.
About the Project
- It will operate with support from three key agencies:
- The Asian Development Bank (ADB)
- The World Bank
- The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)
- It is to be completed by August 2026.
- It envisions key interventions such as:
- Strengthening and integrating disease surveillance and early warning systems.
- Upgrading and expanding laboratory networks for better diagnostics.
- Enhancing interoperable data systems for comprehensive risk analytics.
- Building capacity in data analysis, risk communication, and managing transboundary diseases.
- Fostering India’s role in regional health security through cross-border cooperation.
