Why in News? 

The Registrar General of India (RGI) has cautioned hospitals across the country over delays in reporting births and deaths, highlighting concerns over timely and accurate data reporting under the Civil Registration System (CRS). 

About Registrar General of India (RGI) 

• Established: 1949 
• Under Ministry: Union Ministry of Home Affairs 

Key Responsibilities of RGI 

• Housing & Population Census: Conducted under the Census Act, 1948. 
• Civil Registration System (CRS): Operates under the Registration of Births and Deaths (RBD) Act, 1969 and ensures compulsory registration of births and deaths 
• Sample Registration System (SRS), Use vital statistics like: Birth Rate, Death Rate, Infant Mortality Rate and Maternal Mortality Rate. 
• National Population Register (NPR): Based on Citizenship Rules, 2003, framed under Citizenship Act, 1955. 
• Mother Tongue Survey: Documents linguistic features of selected mother tongues.
