Operation Chakra-III: CBI Arrests 26 Cybercriminals

Why in the News?

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested 26 individuals from Pune, Hyderabad, and Visakhapatnam, following a crackdown on a technology-enabled crime network across 32 locations. The cybercriminals impersonated tech support, defrauding victims via cryptocurrency and international gift cards.

Operation Chakra-III

  • It is a multi-phase mission launched in collaboration with international law enforcement agencies like United States' Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
  • It has uncovered extensive evidence of illicit activities, including the recovery of significant cash, luxury vehicles and gold bullion.
  • The operation is part of a series of crackdowns on technology-enabled crime syndicates operating through illegal call centers in India and cybercriminals targeting unsuspecting individuals, particularly in the U.S.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)

  • Establishment: 1 April 1963
  • Director: Praveen Sood
  • It was recommended by the Santhanam Committee on Prevention of Corruption (1962–1964).
  • It is the premier investigating police agency in India.
  • It helps the Central Vigilance Commission and Lokpal.
  • It is functioning under Dept. of Personnel, Ministry of Personnel, Pension & Public Grievances (PMO).
  • A nodal police agency which coordinates investigation on behalf of Interpol Member countries.
  • The state’s consent is required to extend the CBI investigation beyond Union Territories.
