Why in News? 

Brazil's government has recently authorized the country's membership in OPEC+, the coalition of leading oil-exporting nations. 

About  

  • OPEC+ is a coalition of 22 oil-exporting countries. 
  • The group meets regularly to decide the quantity of crude oil to be sold on the global market. 
  • Its primary aim is to coordinate oil production and ensure stability in the oil market. 

 Origin  

  • Established in late 2016 to formalize cooperation between OPEC and non-OPEC oil-producing countries. 
  • The framework was created to promote regular and sustainable collaboration on oil production decisions. 

 Members  

  • 12 OPEC countries: Algeria, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. 
  • 10 non-OPEC countries: Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Brunei, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mexico, Malaysia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Oman. 

What is OPEC? 

  • A permanent intergovernmental organization of oil-exporting nations. 
  • Founded in 1960 by five countries: Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela. 
  • Current members include: Algeria, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Libya, Nigeria, and the United Arab Emirates, alongside the founding nations. 
  • Angola withdrew from OPEC on January 1, 2024. 
  • Headquarters: Located in Vienna, Austria.
