Why in the News?

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC) launched the 'One Day One Genome' initiative on the 1st foundation day of BRIC, celebrated at the National Institute of Immunology (NII), New Delhi, on 9th November 2024. Shri Amitabh Kant, India’s G-20 Sherpa and Former CEO of NITI Aayog, announced this initiative to emphasize India’s unique microbial diversity and its significance in environmental sustainability, agriculture, and human health.

    • Showcase India’s microbial diversity.
    • Highlight critical roles of microorganisms in the environment, agriculture, and human health.
    • Make microbial genome data publicly accessible with detailed annotations and infographics.

What is Genome?

  • The complete set of DNA (genetic material) in an organism.
  • In people, almost every cell in the body contains a complete copy of the genome.
  • The genome contains all of the information needed for a person to develop and grow.
