Why in News? 

On January 14, 2025, Union Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the National Turmeric Board to assist turmeric farmers and boost exports. 

National Turmeric Board 

  • Nature: The National Turmeric Board is not a statutory body. 
  • Nodal Ministry: Managed by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. 
  • Membership 
    • Chairperson appointed by the Central Government. 
    • Members from Ministry of AYUSH, Departments of Pharmaceuticals, Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, and Commerce & Industry. 
    • Senior State Government representatives (on a rotating basis) from three states. 
    • Representatives from national/state institutions involved in research. 
    • Representatives of turmeric farmers and exporters. 
    • Secretary appointed by the Department of Commerce. 

 Importance of Turmeric for India 

  • Leading Producer & Exporter: India is the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of turmeric. 
  • Varieties & Regions: Over 30 varieties are grown across 20+ states, with major production in Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. 
  • Global Trade: India controls over 62% of global turmeric trade, exporting 1.534 lakh tonnes worth 207.45 million USD in 2022-23. 
  • Top Export Markets: Bangladesh, UAE, USA, and Malaysia are the leading export destinations.
