National Science Day 2025

Miscellaneous

Why in News?

Every year February 28 is celebrated as National Science Day to honor the discovery of the Raman Effect.

Theme: Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for Viksit Bharat.

What is the Raman Effect?

  • Discovered by Physicist C.V. Raman, who won the Nobel Prize in 1930.
  • It refers to the change in light’s wavelength when it interacts with molecules and describes the inelastic scattering of light by matter, causing a shift in the scattered light’s frequency.
  • The Raman Effect is the foundation of Raman Spectroscopy, widely used in chemistry and physics to analyze materials.
  • Spectroscopy studies how matter interacts with electromagnetic radiation.

About C.V. Raman
