India celebrates National Mathematics Day annually on December 22 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of the world's greatest mathematicians.
Who was Srinivasa Ramanujan?
- Birth: December 22, 1887, in Erode, Tamil Nadu.
- Education: Secured a scholarship to the University of Madras in 1903, later lost due to his singular focus on mathematics.
- Achievements:
- Published his first paper in 1911.
- Collaborated with British mathematician G.H. Hardy starting in 1913.
- Elected to the Royal Society of London in 1918, becoming one of its youngest members and the first Indian Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.
- Death: April 26, 1920, at age 32.
Contributions to Mathematics
- Formulas and Equations
- Compiled 3,900 mathematical results, including an infinite series for Pi and unconventional methods to calculate Pi's digits.
- Game Theory
- Developed innovative ideas that greatly advanced the field of game theory.
- Ramanujan’s Notebook
- Rediscovered in 1976, the contents of his notebook were later published as a book.
