- It is observed annually on 11th September in India to honor the sacrifices of those who have laid down their lives in defense of the country's forests and wildlife.
- Objective: To raise awareness about the importance of forest conservation and the dangers faced by those working to protect natural resources.
- The day commemorates the 1730 Khejarli Massacre in Rajasthan, where 363 members of the Bishnoi community, led by Amrita Devi were killed while protecting trees from being felled by the orders of the king.
- This date was selected by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in 2013.
- The theme for 2024 focuses on “Honoring the Sacrifices of those who Defended Forests and Wildlife”.
