Why in News?
The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) recently celebrated its 22nd Foundation Day.
About
- NCST is a constitutional body established under Article 338A of the Constitution through the 89th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2003.
- This amendment bifurcated the former National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes into two separate bodies:
- National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC)
- National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST)
- Composition: Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and three members. All members are appointed by the President of India through a warrant under his hand and seal.
- Tenure: 3 years for Chairperson and members (max 2 terms)
- Headquarters: New Delhi
- Mandate
- To investigate, monitor, and inquire into matters related to the safeguards provided to Scheduled Tribes (STs) under the Constitution.
- To ensure the protection of the rights and interests of Scheduled Tribes.
