About National Bird Day 

It is celebrated annually on January 5^th to raise awareness about the role of birds in the ecosystem. 

History and Origin: National Bird Day, established by the Avian Welfare Coalition, promotes bird welfare in the wild and captivity. The date commemorates the start of the wild bird preservation movement in the early 20^th century, which shaped modern conservation efforts. 

• Birds have faced threats like: 
  • Hunting for feathers and meat 
  • Habitat loss due to deforestation and urbanization 
  • The illegal pet trade 

The day also recognizes conservationists' efforts in saving endangered species like the Bald Eagle and California Condor. 

•  India’s Efforts: The Union Minister for Environment urged the protection of wetlands to preserve bird populations. 
• Wetlands' Importance: Essential for sustaining bird species and ecosystems in India. 
• National Bird Day is distinct from events like International Migratory Bird Day, World Migratory Bird Day (May 13), and other National Bird Days.
