Why in the News?

The Namo Drone Didi scheme, recently launched by the Government of India, aims to modernize Indian agriculture and empower women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs). This initiative, launched in 2024, supports 15,000 SHGs with drones for agricultural services, aiming to boost incomes and improve farming efficiency across rural India.

About Namo Drone Didi Scheme

  • It is a Central Sector Scheme.
  • Aim: To empower women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs) by providing drone technology for agricultural services like spraying pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Launch Date: November 2024 by the Government of India.
  • Eligibility: Women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM).
  • Benefits Offered
    • Covers 80% of drone costs (up to ₹8 lakh) for SHGs, with loan options for the remaining cost.
    • 15-days training for drone operation and agricultural application.
    • Expected annual income increase of at least ₹1 lakh per SHG.
    • Networking and support from agricultural experts, creating growth and learning opportunities.

About Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM

  • It is Centrally Sponsored flagship program of the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD)
  • Aim:
    • Reduce poverty through building strong institutions for the poor, particularly women
    • Enable access to financial services and livelihoods opportunities
  • Launched
    • Restructured from Swarnajayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY)
    • Renamed as DAY-NRLM on 29th March 2016
  • Benefits Offered:
    • Financial and technical support to Self Help Groups (SHGs)
    • Skill development training
    • Access to micro-credit and other financial services
    • Market linkages for products and services
    • Social and economic empowerment of rural poor, especially women
