Why in the News?
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, a leader from Namibia's ruling Southwest Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) party, has been elected as the country's first female president. She secured 57% of the votes in Namibia’s eighth presidential election, held in 2023. Her closest rival, Panduleni Itula, received 26% of the votes. In addition, SWAPO claimed victory in the National Assembly elections, winning 51 out of 96 seats.
