 Miyawaki Plantation Method

  • The Miyawaki method, named after Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, involves planting 2–4 indigenous tree species per square meter.
  • Developed in the 1970s, its primary aim is to create dense green cover in small areas.
  • The trees grow to their full height within three years, becoming self-sustaining, requiring minimal maintenance like watering or manuring.
  • Common indigenous plants used include Anjan, Amala, Bel, Arjun, and Gunj.

Significance

  • It regulates surface temperature.
  • It grows 10 times faster than conventional forests.
  • It provides 300% more green cover in limited spaces.
  • It restores biodiversity with native species.
