Kolkata’s Famous Trams Face Discontinuation After 150 Years

The Kolkata trams, which have operated since 1873 will face discontinuation soon due to due to traffic congestion during peak hour.
History of Trams
- The first trams, drawn by horses, took to Calcutta streets on 24th February 1873.
- The tram cars were imported from England. Calcutta was the first city in Asia to get the electric tram, service began in 1902 between Esplanade and Kidderpore.
- With large numbers of passengers traveling daily, Kolkata tram is held in high esteem and designated to be the ‘Lifeline of the Kolkata City’
- Reason for Discontinuation
- It was challenging for vehicles and trams to share the same road, contributing to congestion and traffic jams, especially during peak hours.
- All the tram routes are being terminated, except for one.
- The route from Esplanade to Maidaan will still be operational as a joyride to experience the nostalgic tram again.
- People Reaction
- The decision to discontinue the tram service has sparked protests among locals.
- As of now, the matter is under consideration by the Calcutta High Court.
