Why in News?
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone for the Ken-Betwa River Link Project on December 25, 2025.
About
- The Ken-Betwa Link Project is a river interlinking initiative aimed at transferring surplus water from the Ken River in Madhya Pradesh to the Betwa River in Uttar Pradesh.
- It is designed to irrigate the drought-prone Bundelkhand region, spanning districts like Jhansi, Banda, Lalitpur, and Mahoba in UP, and Tikamgarh, Panna, and Chhatarpur in MP.
The project includes
- Construction of a 77-meter tall and 2-kilometer wide Dhaudhan Dam within the Panna Tiger Reserve.
- A 230-kilometer canal for water transfer.
- It is part of 30 river interlinking projects planned across India.
Significance
- The project will enhance water conservation
- Generate 103 MW of hydropower
- Provide drinking water to 62 lakh people.
Ken and Betwa Rivers The Ken and Betwa rivers originate in Madhya Pradesh and are tributaries of the Yamuna River.
