Why in News? 

The 3rd edition of Kashi Tamil Sangamam (KTS 3.0) is being held in Varanasi (Kashi), Uttar Pradesh, to strengthen the deep-rooted cultural bond between Tamil Nadu and Kashi. 

Key Highlights of KTS 3.0 

  • This event honors the legacy of Sage Agastya and aligns with the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.  
  • Central Theme: Legacy of Sage Agastya. 
  • Previous Editions: 1st edition in 2022 and 2nd edition in 2023. 
  • Around 1,000 delegates from Tamil Nadu are participating, including students, teachers, writers, farmers, artisans, entrepreneurs and self-Help Groups (SHGs). 

 Historical Significance 

  • The bond between Kashi and Tamil Nadu dates back to the 15th century when King Parakrama Pandya of Madurai brought a sacred lingam from Kashi to establish the Sivakasi temple in Tamil Nadu. 
  • The Pandya kings also built the Kasi Viswanathar Temple in Tenkasi (near the Kerala border), reflecting this spiritual connection. 

 Objectives of KTS 

  • Knowledge Sharing – Connecting scholars, artisans, and professionals from both regions. 
  • Academic Collaboration – Promoting Indian Knowledge Systems as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. 
  • Cultural Promotion – Showcasing Tamil Nadu’s art, literature, and cuisine. 
  • Youth Engagement – Offering students hands-on exposure to India’s ancient cultural heritage. 

 Legacy of Sage Agastya 

  • A revered Saptarishi in Vedic and Puranic texts. 
  • Known as the “Father of Tamil Language” and the pioneer of Siddha medicine. 
  • Authored the first Tamil grammar book, Agattiyam, and introduced the Tamil script. 
  • Credited with spreading Vedic culture to South India and advancing traditional medicine. 
  • Mentioned in the Ramayana for his hermitage near the Godavari River.
