Why in News?
In January 2025, Kappad Beach in Kozhikode and Chal Beach in Kannur, both in Kerala, were granted the esteemed Blue Flag certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Denmark.
About the Blue Flag Program
- Established: The Blue Flag program began in 1985 in France, aiming to promote sustainable development in coastal and inland areas.
- Global Reach: Expanded internationally in 2001, covering beaches, marinas, and eco-friendly tourism boats in over 40 countries.
- Purpose: The certification helps preserve the natural beauty of beaches and educates visitors on the importance of environmental responsibility and sustainability.
- Global Recognition of the Blue Flag: The Blue Flag is a certification granted to beaches, marinas, and boating operators that meet 33 stringent criteria established by Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
- Main Areas of Focus,
- Water Quality: Ensuring the water at the beach adheres to environmental standards.
- Environmental Education: Informing the public about sustainability and environmental challenges.
- Environmental Management: Adopting practices to safeguard the environment, manage waste, and conserve resources.

Other Indian Beaches with Blue Flag Certification
Chandrabhaga Beach (Odisha): India's First Blue Flag Beach India's inaugural Blue Flag certified beach is Chandrabhaga Beach, situated in Odisha. This certification set a benchmark for other beaches in India, inspiring them to embrace eco-friendly practices and promote responsible tourism. Following this, Kappad and Chal beaches in Kerala have also achieved the same recognition. |
