Why in the News?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded a women’s self-help group (SHG) from Jhansi for reviving the Ghurari river in Bundelkhand region and preventing water wastage.
What is Jal-Saheli Campaign?
The group, known as ‘Jal Sahelis’, had taken an initiative to construct a check-dam using sand-filled sacks in order to stop rainwater from going waste and in turn replenishing the river in the region which frequently faces water shortage.
The self-help group from Simrawari village in Babina block of the district gave over six days of voluntary labour to construct the dam.
The water in the river now provides essential resources for local people, serving their bathing needs and providing drinking water for animals.
