Why in News?
International Epilepsy Day is observed annually on the second Monday of February to promote awareness and understanding of epilepsy.
What is Epilepsy Disease?
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Seizures can vary in intensity, ranging from brief lapses in attention or muscle jerks to prolonged, severe convulsions.
Symptoms:
- Repeated seizures
- Temporary confusion
- Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs
- Loss of consciousness or awareness
- Psychic symptoms
Historical Background: Established in 2015 by International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), aims to raise awareness and promote better healthcare and social inclusion for those with epilepsy.
