Why in News?
The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) has officially become a fully established treaty-based Inter - governmental international organization.
About IBCA
- It is a global coalition comprising 96 countries, both big cat range and non-range nations, working together with multiple agencies to protect seven big cat species and their habitats.
- Objective: Dedicated to the protection and conservation of the world’s major big cats, including tigers, lions, leopards, jaguars and cheetahs.
- Launch: First proposed by India’s Prime Minister in 2019 and officially launched in April 2023 to mark the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger.
- Headquarters: New Delhi, India.
- Focus Species: Primarily covers seven species of big cats—tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards, cheetahs, jaguars, and pumas.
- Significance:
- Encourages collaboration and knowledge-sharing on conservation strategies.
- Ensures funding for big cat conservation efforts.
- Works on habitat protection, population monitoring, and anti-poaching measures.
