Why in the News?  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently became the first Indian leader in over five decades to visit Guyana, where he co-chaired the second India-Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Summit. At this event, he introduced a seven-pillar framework aimed at enhancing India-CARICOM relations. The pillars form the acronym "CARICOM" and highlight areas of potential cooperation: 

About CARICOM (Caribbean Community) Summit 

  • It is a crucial diplomatic gathering aimed at fostering cooperation between member states of the Caribbean region.  
  • The Second India-CARICOM Summit took place on 20th November, 2024, marking a significant step in strengthening India-Caribbean relations. 
  •  This summit was co-chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada, the current chair of CARICOM. 
  •  This event provided a platform for leaders to discuss mutual interests such as economic growth, climate change, technology, health, and more. 
  • Formation of CARICOM: It was established on 1st Augsut, 1973, through the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas by Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
