Indian Classical Dances

History

About 

  • Rooted in Sangeet Nataka (12th–19th century), with evidence from inscriptions, literature, and art. 
  • Two main aspects: Tandava (rhythm & movement) and Lasya (grace & expression). 
  • Three components: Natya (drama), Nritta (pure dance), Nritya (expressive gestures). 
  • Nine Rasas: Love, Heroism, Pathos, Humour, Anger, Fear, Disgust, Wonder, Peace. 
  • Natya Shastra by Bharat Muni is the key text on dance aesthetics. 
  • The list of classical dances in India is given below: 
    • Bharatanatyam – Tamil Nadu (oldest) 
    • Kathak – Uttar Pradesh 
    • Kathakali – Kerala 
    • Mohiniyattam – Kerala 
    • Kuchipudi – Andhra Pradesh 
    • Odissi – Odisha 
    • Manipuri – Manipur 
    • Sattriya – Assam 

 NOTE: Ministry of Culture has recognised nine classical dance forms including Chhau.
