History
About
- Rooted in Sangeet Nataka (12th–19th century), with evidence from inscriptions, literature, and art.
- Two main aspects: Tandava (rhythm & movement) and Lasya (grace & expression).
- Three components: Natya (drama), Nritta (pure dance), Nritya (expressive gestures).
- Nine Rasas: Love, Heroism, Pathos, Humour, Anger, Fear, Disgust, Wonder, Peace.
- Natya Shastra by Bharat Muni is the key text on dance aesthetics.
- The list of classical dances in India is given below:
- Bharatanatyam – Tamil Nadu (oldest)
- Kathak – Uttar Pradesh
- Kathakali – Kerala
- Mohiniyattam – Kerala
- Kuchipudi – Andhra Pradesh
- Odissi – Odisha
- Manipuri – Manipur
- Sattriya – Assam
NOTE: Ministry of Culture has recognised nine classical dance forms including Chhau.
