Why in the News?
The Indian Chemical Council (ICC) was conferred the 2024 OPCW-The Hague Award on 25th November 2024, during the 29th Session of the Conference of the States Parties (CSP) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague. This is the first time a chemical industry body has received this prestigious recognition. The award celebrates ICC’s contributions to chemical safety, compliance, and industrial security, aligning with the objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
About OPCW-The Hague Award
- Established: 2014
- Following OPCW’s receipt of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to eliminate chemical weapons.
- Objective: To honor individuals and organizations contributing significantly to the goals of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
- It seeks a world free of chemical weapons.
- Presented By: OPCW Director-General and the Mayor of The Hague.
- India’s Role:
- India is a founding member of the CWC.
- India plays a pivotal part in global chemical safety efforts.
- The National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention (NACWC) implements CWC directives within India.
