Why in the News?  

India has voted in favour of a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution also demands humanitarian assistance and reiterates the vision of a two-state solution. 

Key Points of the Resolution 

  • Ceasefire and Hostage Release: 
    • An immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire to be respected by all parties. 
    • Immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. 
  • Humanitarian Access: 
    • Calls for unhindered humanitarian assistance across Gaza, especially for civilians in besieged north Gaza. 
    • Rejects any effort to starve the Palestinian population. 
  • Compliance with International Law: 
    • Urges all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, especially concerning civilian protection. 
    • Demands the release of arbitrarily detained individuals. 
  • Two-State Solution: 
    • Reaffirms commitment to the two-state solution, envisioning Palestine and Israel living side-by-side within secure borders. 
    • Rejects any demographic or territorial changes in Gaza and calls for its unification with the West Bank under Palestinian Authority. 

What Is Two State Resolution?  

  • It is a proposed framework to resolve the long-standing conflict between Israel and Palestine. 
  •  It envisions the establishment of two independent, sovereign states—Israel and Palestine—coexisting peacefully side by side. 
  • Borders: Based on pre-1967 borders, prior to the Six-Day War when Israel occupied the Palestinian territories.

Six Day War:

  • Fought between June 5 and June 10, 1967. 
  • It was a pivotal conflict in the Middle East involving Israel and its neighboring states—Egypt, Jordan, and Syria 
  • The war significantly altered the geopolitical landscape of the region.
