Why in the News?
India launched the “Bharat-Gen” initiative aimed at creating generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Indian languages. It focuses on data-efficient learning for underrepresented languages, with completion expected in two years. Four Quantum Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs) for Quantum Computing, Communication, Sensing and Metrology, Materials and Devices under the National Quantum Mission (NQM).
Bharat-Gen AI Model
- Launched on: 30th September 2024
- It is the world’s first government-funded Multimodal Large Language Model project.
- Developed By: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS).
- Aim: To develop generative AI systems that enhance public service delivery and promote inclusivity by making AI accessible in various Indian languages.
- Features
- It supports both text and speech across various Indian languages.
- Creating high-quality text and multimodal content in Indian languages.
- Building open-source foundational AI models to democratize AI across India.
- Facilitating collaboration among researchers and developers for innovative AI solutions.
- Ensuring data-efficient learning, especially for Indian languages with limited digital presence.
- Supporting government, private, educational and research institutions in benefiting from AI advancements.
- Four T-Hubs are based at IISc Bengaluru, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and Centre for Development of Telematics New Delhi, comprising 17 Technical Groups across 17 states and two union territories.
- It will operate under the Hub-Spoke-Spike model facilitating collaboration among research institutions for coordinated research and resource sharing.
