Why in News?  

India won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, defeating New Zealand by 4 wickets in the final at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. 

  • This victory marks India’s third Champions Trophy title, breaking the tie with Australia. India previously won in 2002 (shared with Sri Lanka) and 2013.

  • History of the Tournament 
    • Originally called the ICC Knockout when it began in 1998 (Dhaka, Bangladesh). 
    • Renamed ICC Champions Trophy in 2002 and held biennially until 2009, after which it shifted to a four-year cycle. 
  • Tournament Format 
    • Adopted in 2006, this format remains unchanged. 
    • 8 teams, split into two groups of four. 
    • Each team plays once against the others in its group. 
    • Top 2 teams from each group move to the semi-finals, leading to the final.
