China is currently experiencing an outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), leading to overcrowded hospitals, particularly in pediatric wards.
What is HMPV?
- China is experiencing an outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) - a virus that leads to upper and lower respiratory infections. It affects individuals of all ages, including young children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems. The virus was first identified in 2001.
Symptoms of HMPV
- Cough
- Fever
- Nasal congestion
- Shortness of breath
In severe cases, HMPV may cause complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
Transmission of HMPV
- Spread through droplets from coughing and sneezing.
- Close personal contact, such as handshakes.
- Contact with contaminated surfaces followed by touching the mouth, nose, or eyes.
Preventive steps include washing hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and refraining from touching the face.
At-Risk Groups
- Young children
- Older adults
- People with weakened immune systems
Seeking medical attention is recommended if symptoms persist or worsen after a few days, or if a fever continues for more than three days without improvement.
