Why in News?
The Defence Minister awarded gallantry, distinguished service, and meritorious service medals to Indian Coast Guard (ICG) personnel in recognition of their outstanding service.
About
Gallantry awards recognize acts of bravery by personnel of the Armed Forces, other security forces, and civilians. These awards are announced on Republic Day and Independence Day.

Indian Coast Guard (ICG)
It is a maritime security force responsible for enforcing maritime laws and operates under the Ministry of Defence.
- Established: 1st February 1977
- Became an Independent Armed Force: 18th August 1978 (after the enactment of the Coast Guard Act, 1978)
- Background: In 1972, UNCLOS granted Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) to coastal states. To enforce maritime security, India enacted the Maritime Zones of India Act, 1976, claiming 2.01 million sq. km of ocean, necessitating the formation of the ICG.
- Jurisdiction: Covers India's territorial waters (up to 12 nautical miles (nm)), contiguous zone (up to 24 nm), and EEZ (up to 200 nm).
- Global Standing: It is the 4th largest Coast Guard in the world.
