What is the FAME India Scheme?
Background
- The Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) India Scheme is part of the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan.
- Its primary goal is to encourage the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles by providing incentives on their purchase and developing the required infrastructure.
Phase I (2015-2019)
- The first phase of the FAME scheme had a budget of ₹895 crore.
- It focused on four areas: technology development, demand creation, pilot projects, and charging infrastructure.
- During this phase, approximately 2.78 lakh electric vehicles were incentivized, and 465 electric buses were sanctioned to various cities and states.
Phase II (2019-2024)
- The second phase, with a budget of ₹10,000 crore, focuses on electrifying public and shared transportation.
- It supports e-buses, e-3 wheelers, e-4 wheeler passenger cars, and e-2 wheelers through demand incentives.
- Additionally, it emphasizes creating a robust charging infrastructure across the country to support EV adoption.
Significance of the FAME India Scheme
- The FAME India Scheme plays a vital role in promoting sustainable mobility in India.
- It reduces environmental pollution, supports local manufacturing of EVs and their components, and helps transition from fossil fuel-based transportation to cleaner alternatives.
- By focusing on electric mobility, the scheme also aligns with India’s broader climate goals and energy security objectives.
