Why in the News?

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, along with State Forest Departments, has verified and mapped 150 elephant corridors across 15 states where elephants are found (Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal). State governments and Union Territory administrations have been notified to implement measures for safeguarding and conserving these critical habitats.

What Are Elephant Corridors?

  • It is that it is a strip of land that facilitates the movement of elephants between two or more viable habitat patches.
  • However, the movement of elephants away from forest habitats into the human domain without connecting to viable habitat patches may not be considered elephant corridors.
