World Red Cross Day 2023

  • On May 8th each year, the world celebrates World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day in honour of Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
  • Henry Dunant was born on May 8th, 1828, in Geneva and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • This day commemorates the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, which aims to provide aid to those affected by war, natural disasters, epidemics, and food shortages.
  • On this occasion, various organizations, including governments and private entities, actively participate in providing essential resources and support to those in need. Their efforts aim to alleviate the suffering of individuals affected by various calamities.
  • This year the theme for World Red Cross Day or Red Crescent Day is "Everything we do comes #fromtheheart."

PM Modi Accepts French Invite for Bastille Day

  • France has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the annual Bastille Day parade as a guest in July. However, the visit is still being discussed. The proposed visit is expected to take place around July 14 and would be an addition to Mr. Modi's busy diplomatic schedule.
  • During the visit, the Indian Prime Minister and French President Emmanuel Macron are anticipated to hold discussions on several crucial agreements pertaining to the Indo-Pacific region, nuclear power, and defense, as the two countries commemorate the 25th year of their strategic partnership.
  • Despite having visited France several times before, including in May 2022, this would be the first instance in over a decade where an Indian Prime Minister would attend the annual military parade, with the last being when Manmohan Singh was invited as the guest of honour in 2009.

Praveen Chithravel Breaks National Record at Meet in Cuba

  • Three months ago, triple jumper Praveen Chithravel expressed optimism that the national record for triple jump, held by Renjith Maheswary since 2016 at 17.30m, could be broken early in the current season.
  • Speaking from his training base at the JSW Inspire Institute of Sport in Ballari in February, Chithravel confidently shared his goal of surpassing 17.40m or even 17.50m.
  • This ambitious target was fueled by the excellent form displayed by the country's top triple jumpers in the previous year, and Chithravel remained positive about his progress towards achieving it.
  • As the Asian indoor silver medallist, he was determined to put in the necessary effort and continue making strides towards his goals.

Inauguration of Dawki Land Port

  • Union Minister Nityanand Rai recently inaugurated the Dawki land port in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, aimed at promoting trade and commerce between India and Bangladesh.
  • The inauguration ceremony was attended by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
  • Rai expressed his optimism that the land port would have a positive impact on both the tourism and business sectors, thereby strengthening economic ties between the two countries.

HDFC Bank Launched Programme ‘Vishesh’

  • HDFC Bank introduced its retail banking initiative, 'Vishesh', specifically aimed at customers residing in semi-urban and rural areas.
  • The bank's goal is to onboard roughly 100,000 new customers by adding more branches and introducing customized financial products and solutions tailored to the needs of this particular market segment.
  • The program offers various discounts such as up to a 50% discount on processing fees for gold loans, as well as a 50% waiver on valuation once a year.
  • An annual preventive health check-up up to Rs 3,000, one annual complimentary and cashless health check-up, unlimited Tele Health consultations, and a range of AgriTech services such as soil testing are provided.

SEBI Introduces LEI System

  • SEBI, the Securities and Exchange Board of India, has implemented the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) system for companies that have listed, or are considering listing, non-convertible securities, security receipts, or securitized debt instruments.
  • This system assigns a unique global identifier to legal entities involved in financial transactions, with the goal of establishing a universal reference data system that identifies each party to a financial transaction.
  • The LEI code is a 20-character code that identifies legally distinct entities that engage in financial transactions.

Border Haat Between India and Bangladesh

  • Border haat was inaugurated at Bholaganj in Companiganj upazila, marking the first such market along the India border in Sylhet division.
  • The event was graced by the presence of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmad and Indian High Commissioner in Sylhet Niraj Kumar Jaiswal.
  • This haat, situated between East Khasi Hills of India's Meghalaya and Sylhet's Bholaganj, aims to promote cross-border trade and commerce.

Madrid Open 2023

  • The Madrid Open is an annual professional tennis tournament held in Madrid, Spain, which is part of the ATP Tour and the WTA Tour, the respective professional tennis circuits for men and women.
  • With its matches held at the Caja Magica, a multi-purpose stadium featuring three clay courts, the tournament is considered to be one of the most renowned tennis events globally.

Uttar Pradesh to Get its First Pharma Park

  • The government of Uttar Pradesh has given its approval for the establishment of the first Pharma Park in the state, which will be located in Lalitpur district of Bundelkhand.
  • The proposed project will involve the transfer of 1500 hectares of land from the Animal Husbandry Department to the Industrial Development Department.
  • The government has also allocated a budget of Rs 1560 crore to develop and provide necessary facilities for investors in the Lalitpur Pharma Park.
