Tamil Nadu Food Safety Department Launched an App for Grievances

  • At a ceremony held at the Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital in Omandurar Estate, the Health Minister Ma Subramanian introduced a mobile application and website for the Food Safety Department.
  • During the event, the Health Minister unveiled a mobile application called "Tamil Nadu Food Safety Consumer" and a website, ‘www.foodsafety.tn.gov.in’, which offer information on safe food and other related details.
  • The website is available in both Tamil and English and includes a screen reader feature to facilitate accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

The NTPC Group Has Achieved a Total Installed Capacity of 72,304 MW

  • NTPC Ltd, a government-owned company, announced that the group's installed capacity has now reached 72,304 MW, following the incorporation of Unit 1 of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant (MSTPP) in Bangladesh.
  • According to a statement by the power company, NTPC Group has attained a noteworthy feat in the power industry by achieving an installed capacity of 72,304 MW, which encompasses the recent integration of Unit-1 of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant (MSTPP) located in Rampal, Mongla, Bagerhat, Bangladesh. This unit has a capacity of 660 MW and is part of the 1,320 MW (2x660) MSTPP project.

Dialog Axiata and Bharti Airtel Announced Plans to Merge their Operations in Sri Lanka

  • Dialog Axiata and Bharti Airtel revealed their intention to merge their operations in Sri Lanka, forming the largest telecommunications company in the country.
  • According to a joint statement by Dialog Axiata Plc, Axiata Group Berhad, and Bharti Airtel, the companies have signed a binding term sheet to merge Bharti Airtel Lanka Pvt. with a subsidiary of Dialog. Under the agreement, Airtel will obtain new shares of Dialog that reflect the fair value of Airtel Lanka.

World Portuguese Language Day 2023

  • May 5 is observed every year to promote the Portuguese language and uphold the culture and identity of Portuguese people.
  • With over 265 million native speakers worldwide, Portuguese is among the most widely spoken languages globally and is particularly prominent in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • As the sixth most frequently spoken language in the world, the history, culture, and influence of Portuguese on the rest of the globe deserve to be explored.
  • World Portuguese Language Day is designated on May 5 by the intergovernmental organization Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP). Since 2000, the CPLP has been in an official partnership with UNESCO.
  • However, it was only in 2019 during the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference that May 5 was officially recognized as World Portuguese Language Day.

India's Unemployment Rate Increased to 8.11% in April

  • The unemployment rate in India climbed to 8.11 per cent in April 2023 from 7.8 per cent in March 2023. This marks the fourth consecutive monthly increase in unemployment since the beginning of the year, when it stood at 7.14 per cent in January 2023.
  • Compared to this, the April rate is almost one percentage point higher. Over the past 12 months, the unemployment rate has fluctuated between 6.4 per cent and 8.3 per cent, with an average of 7.6 per cent. Consequently, the April rate of 8.11 per cent falls toward the higher end of the range.

AP Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy Laid the Foundation Stone of the Vizag Tech Park

  • The foundation stone for Vizag Tech Park was laid by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. The event witnessed the presence of Adani Group's Managing Director, Rajesh Adani and CEO, Karan Adani.
  • According to officials from the Andhra Pradesh government, the establishment of a 300-Megawatt (MW) data centre by the Adani Group in Visakhapatnam will enable the installation of a submarine cable from Singapore, resulting in potential changes to future broadband service dynamics. This could include improvements in data speed and internet bandwidth.
  • As a part of the Rs 21,844 crore Vizag Tech Park, a subsidiary of the Adani Group, two data centres are being established with capacities of 200 MW and 100 MW, respectively.
  • The Adani Group is responsible for setting up both of these centres, which will be the largest facilities of their kind in the country. The most notable aspect of these data centres is that they will operate completely on renewable energy.

RBI and BIS Innovation Hub Have Jointly Announced the Fourth Edition of the ‘G20 TechSprint’

  • The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Innovation Hub and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have launched the fourth edition of the G20 TechSprint, a global technology competition aimed at developing innovative technology solutions for cross-border payments.
  • The competition is open to developers worldwide, who can submit their applications from now until June 4. The results of the competition will be announced at a final event scheduled for August or September of this year.
  • The selected teams will have six weeks to develop their solutions, and each team will be entitled to a stipend of around eight lakh rupees or approximately 10,000 US dollars.
  • A group of independent experts will assess the most promising solution for each problem statement from the shortlisted solutions. The winning team for each problem statement will receive an award of around forty lakh rupees or approximately 50,000 US dollars.

Polavarapu Mallikharjuna Prasad to be the Next Coal India CMD

  • Polavarapu Mallikharjuna Prasad is all set to become the new chairman and managing director of Coal India Limited after receiving approval from the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB). Currently serving as the chairman cum managing director of Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) located in Ranchi, Prasad will take on the new role at Coal India Limited.
  • Seven candidates were shortlisted and interviewed for the post of chairman and managing director of Coal India Limited, according to the Public Enterprises Selection Board.
  • The list of candidates included executives from various companies such as Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL), Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDIL), and NMDC, among others, besides Polavarapu Mallikharjuna Prasad, who is currently posted as chairman cum managing director of Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) based in Ranchi.

Dubai is All Set to Host the Inaugural Global Chess League

  • The Global Chess League (GCL), a partnership between FIDE and Tech Mahindra, has chosen Dubai as the location for its inaugural edition.
  • The event was attended by important officials such as Dr. Aman Puri, the Consul General of India in Dubai, five-time world chess champion and FIDE Deputy President Viswanathan Anand, Tech Mahindra CEO CP Gurnani, EVP & Head of Mahindra Accelo and Global Chess League Board member Parag Shah, and Global Chess League Board Chairperson Jagdish Mitra.
