World Tuna Day 2023

  • The United Nations (UN) designated 2 May as a day to promote awareness of the significance of tuna fish. This day was initially celebrated in 2017.
  • Tuna fish is a valuable marine resource that holds economic importance for both developed and developing countries. It is a crucial source of sustenance for people and has several exceptional qualities, which have led to its overexploitation due to high demand.
  • The United Nations reports that around 7 million tonnes of tuna and tuna-like species are caught every year.
  • Although the theme for World Tuna Day 2023 has not yet been officially announced, Guidely, an online media platform, suggests that it will focus on "The global Tuna Industry: Trailblazing through tough times."

The Indian Air Force (IAF) Will be Participating in Exercise INIOCHOS-23

  • From 24 Apr 2023 to 04 May 2023, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will participate in the multi-national air exercise, Exercise INIOCHOS-23, hosted by the Hellenic Air Force.
  • The exercise will take place at the Andravida Air Base in Greece, and the IAF will bring four Su-30 MKI and two C-17 aircraft to participate.
  • The primary goal of Exercise INIOCHOS-23 is to foster international cooperation and improve synergy and interoperability between the participating Air Forces. The exercise will involve a simulated combat scenario that will include various types of air and surface assets, allowing participants to engage in realistic training.
  • Additionally, the exercise will facilitate professional interactions between the contingents, providing valuable opportunities to learn from each other's best practices.

BEL Has Been Contracted by the Indian Navy to Supply an Anti-Drone System

  • Navratan Defence PSU, Bharat Limited (BEL), has been awarded a contract by the Indian Navy to provide the first locally developed Naval Anti Drone System (NADS) with both 'hard kill' and 'soft kill' capabilities.
  • On August 31, senior Naval officers and representatives from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) were present at the contract signing in New Delhi.
  • The Indian Navy has been unwavering in its support and has played a leading role in the collaborative development of the anti-drone system with DRDO and BEL.

Maria Stepanova Has Been Awarded the Leipzig Book Prize 2023

  • In 2023, Maria Stepanova, a prominent contemporary figure in Russian literature who currently resides in Berlin as an exile, has received the esteemed Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding.
  • Maria Stepanova, a Russian-Jewish writer who delves into Stalinism and the collapse of the Soviet Union in her novel "In Memory of Memory," was a finalist for the Booker Prize in 2021.
  • She was awarded the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding for her book of poetry titled "Girls Without Clothes." This work is a deeply moving and poetic examination of the often-concealed violence perpetrated against women and the underlying power imbalances that perpetuate such oppression.

India to Join International Climate Action in Civil Aviation From 2027

  • From 2027, India will become a participant in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and the Long-Term Aspirational Goals (LTAG) of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
  • The announcement was made during a recent meeting of the Parliament's Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Civil Aviation in New Delhi. The committee was presided over by Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Minister of Civil Aviation.

Decline in the Volume and Value of UPI Transactions During the Month of April

  • Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions declined in volume as well as value terms in April 2023 after peaking in the previous month.
  • According to the "UPI Monthly Product Statistics" published by the National Payments Corporation of India, there was a 7.96% decline in UPI transaction volumes from March 2023 to April 2023, with the latter recording 796.29 crore transactions in comparison to the former's 865.16 crore transactions.
  • The "UPI Monthly Product Statistics" released by the National Payments Corporation of India reveals that the value of UPI transactions in April 2023 decreased by 9.51% compared to March 2023, with April recording a transaction value of ₹12.71 lakh crore, while March recorded ₹14.04 lakh crore.

Agreement Signed Between NTPC and NPCIL for the Collaborative Development of Nuclear Power Plants

  • NTPC Ltd. and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) signed a Supplementary Joint Venture Agreement for the development of Nuclear Power Projects in New Delhi.
  • The agreement was signed in the presence of various officials, including Shri R.K. Singh, Minister of Power, New & Renewable Energy, and Shri K.N. Vyas, Secretary DAE & Chairman Atomic Energy Commission.
  • The agreement was signed by Mr. Ujjwal Kanti Bhattacharya, Director Projects of NTPC Ltd., and Mr. Ranjay Sharan, Director Projects of NPCIL, along with other senior officials.
  • Initially, the JV company shall develop two Pressurized Heavy-Water Reactor (PHWR) projects, Chutka Madhya Pradesh Atomic Power Project 2x700 MW and Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project 4x700 MW, which were identified as a part of fleet mode nuclear projects.
  • The signing of the Supplementary Joint Venture Agreement between NTPC Ltd. and NPCIL is a significant milestone towards their cooperation in developing Nuclear Power projects, contributing towards the country's Clean Energy Commitments to achieve the net-zero emission target by 2070.

India's Gross GST Revenues for April 2023 Reached a Record High of ₹1.87 Lakh Crore

  • The Finance Ministry announced that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for April 2023 reached a record high of Rs 1.87 lakh crore.
  • According to a statement from the government, the gross GST collection for April 2023 has reached an all-time high of Rs 1.87 lakh crore, which is Rs 19,495 crore higher than the previous record of Rs 1.67 lakh crore collected in April 2022. In comparison, GST collections in March were Rs 1.6 lakh crore.
