International Labour Day

  • International Worker's Day or May Day is a widely observed on May 1st that recognizes the achievements of the labour movement.
  • This occasion is marked as a public holiday in over 80 countries and is also known as Labour Day in some nations.
  • The origin of Labour Day can be traced back to a prolonged struggle for improved working conditions and the rights of labourers, and it serves as a reminder to strive for social and economic justice.
  • On this day, workers come together in solidarity, reflecting on their advancements and renewing their commitment to building a world that is just and fair.

NASA Extracts Oxygen from Lunar Soil

  • In Houston's Johnson Space Center, NASA scientists have accomplished the extraction of oxygen from a vacuum environment using simulated lunar soil, a breakthrough that may lead to the establishment of a sustained human presence on the lunar surface, and potentially even the colonization of the Moon.
  • The capacity to extract oxygen from lunar soil is not only vital for supplying breathable air to astronauts on the Moon, but it can also serve as fuel for transportation and facilitate further exploration of space.

Santiago Pena Wins Paraguay Vote

  • On 30th April 2023, the people of Paraguay chose a president from the right-wing party that has been in control for almost eighty years, rejecting a center-left opponent who criticized widespread institutional corruption.
  • Santiago Pena, a 44-year-old economist and former finance minister, won the election with over 42% of the vote, ensuring the continued dominance of the conservative Colorado Party, according to the results.

PM Modi Inaugurates 91 FM Radio Transmitters

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi disclosed the deployment of 100-watt low-power FM transmitters in 91 locations, which will expand the All India Radio (AIR) network from 524 to 615 stations.
  • The installation of transmitters was prioritized in regions impacted by left-wing extremism, border areas, and districts with aspirations for development.

Debadatta Chand Appointed as Managing Director of Bank of Baroda

  • Bank of Baroda (BOB) has announced that Debadatta Chand, who was the Executive Director at the bank, has been appointed as its Managing Director (MD) by the government on April 29.
  • According to a regulatory filing by the bank, he will hold the top position for a period of three years starting from the date of taking charge on or after July 1, 2023, or until further notice, whichever is earlier.

Agriculture Minister Launches ‘Millets Experience Centre’ at Dilli Haat

  • Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar launched the first of its kind ‘Millets Experience Centre (MEC)’ at Dilli Haat in New Delhi.
  • National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED) has established the Millets Experience Centre in collaboration with the Agriculture Ministry.
  • It aims to raise awareness of Millets and encourage its adoption among the public.

Rajneesh Karnatak appointed as the New MD and Chairman of Bank of India

  • The government has appointed Rajneesh Karnatak as the Managing Director (MD) of Bank of India (BOI).
  • Currently serving as the Executive Director at Union Bank of India, Karnatak has been selected for the position as per the announcement.
  • He will assume the role of MD & CEO of Bank of India for a term of three years from the date of taking charge, or until further directives, as stated.

First Five Women Army Officers into Regiment of Artillery

  • Indian Army has made history by inducting five women officers into its Regiment of Artillery, with three of them assigned to frontline formations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
  • The newly inducted officers, Lt. Mehak Saini, Lt. Sakshi Dubey, Lt. Aditi Yadav, Lt. Pious Mudgil, and Lt. Akanksha, completed their training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai and have now joined the Army's premier artillery units.

Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan Passes Away

  • N. Gopalakrishnan, the founder of the Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage (IISH) and a former scientist at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has passed away at the age of 68.
  • Gopalakrishnan holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, a Master of Science degree in Chemistry, and a Master of Arts degree in Sociology.
  • He was born to Narayanan Embranthiri and Satyabhama in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, in the city of Kochi.
