Dalai Lama Received Ramon Magsaysay Award 1959

  • After a span of 64 years, Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, was conferred with the 1959 Ramon Magsaysay Award.
  • The president of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation, Susanna B Afan, and foundation trustee, Emily A Abrera, presented the award to him in person at his residence in Himachal Pradesh.
  • In August 1959, the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation in the Philippines bestowed the first international recognition upon the Dalai Lama for his remarkable leadership in the Tibetan community's brave struggle to protect their sacred religion, which forms the basis of their culture and way of life.

Australia to Host Third In-Person Quad Summit

  • On April 26, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Sydney will host the third in-person Quad Summit on May 24, which will be attended by US President Joe Biden, Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Albanese expressed Quad's unwavering commitment to fostering an open, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region that values sovereignty and prioritizes the security and prosperity of all nations.
  • Additionally, he mentioned that the Quad leaders will discuss ways to enhance cooperation and shape the region, along with other regional groupings like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Pacific Islands Forum.

ICT Day 2023

  • ICT Day is an annual event celebrated on the fourth Thursday of April, aimed at encouraging and empowering girls and young women to explore and pursue careers in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry.
  • This day serves as a means to promote gender equality and diversity in the tech sector by raising awareness about the gender gap in the field and inspiring women to consider pursuing a career in ICT.
  • The theme for this year's event, observed on April 27, is "Digital Skills for Life". Despite the vital role of ICT in modern society, a small proportion of women worldwide choose to pursue higher education in ICT-related fields, as per the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

PM inaugurates 6th Edition of ‘One Earth One Health’

  • Through conferencing, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated and addressed the ‘One Earth One Health' - Advantage Healthcare India - 2023 event at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.
  • In his address to the attendees, the Prime Minister welcomed Health Ministers from around the world, along with delegates from West Asia, SAARC, ASEAN, and African regions.
  • He quoted an Indian scripture that advocates for the well-being of everyone, highlighting India's inclusive vision and the nation's universal approach to health even in ancient times.
  • The Prime Minister underlined that One Earth One Health aligns with these values, reflecting a comprehensive approach that encompasses the health of the entire ecosystem, including plants, animals, soil, and rivers.
  • He emphasized that India's goal for health and well-being goes beyond just the absence of illness, and it includes physical, mental, and social welfare for everyone.

National Games to be Inaugurated in Goa

  • The Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant, has disclosed that the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, will inaugurate the National Games scheduled to take place in Goa in October 2023.
  • The announcement came after Sawant, State Sports Minister Govind Gaude, and Indian Olympic Association chairperson PT Usha met to assess the preparations for the event.
  • As per Sawant's statement, the opening ceremony is provisionally set for either October 23 or 24, depending on the Prime Minister's schedule. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium situated in South Goa district, will host the ceremony.

Pankaj Singh Elected Unopposed as Cycling Federation President

  • During the Annual General Body meeting held in Nainital, Pankaj Singh, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Noida and the son of Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has been unopposed elected as the president of the Cycling Federation of India (CFI).
  • The Cycling Federation of India (CFI) is India's governing body for the sport of cycling, with the responsibility of encouraging, fostering, and regulating cycling events throughout the country.
  • The CFI, which was founded in 1946, is recognized by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the global governing body for cycling.

New CEO of Association of Asset Reconstruction Companies

  • Hari Hara Mishra has taken charge of the position of Chief Executive Officer at the Association of Asset Reconstruction Companies, which serves as the representative body for all Asset Reconstruction Companies (ARCs) and has been operational for over eight years. As of now, Reserve Bank of India has registered 28 ARCs.
  • Since 2004, Hari Hara Mishra has been associated with the Asset Reconstruction Sector in various executive and director level roles, following his employment as an officer with the State Bank of India from 1982 to 2004.

India Pavilion at Global Education & Training Exhibition in Dubai

  • Dr. Aman Puri, the Consul General of India in Dubai, has inaugurated the 'Study in India Pavilion' at the Global Education & Training Exhibition (GETEX) in Dubai.
  • The India Pavilion, which spans over an area of 200 sqm, showcases over 30 universities and edtech stakeholders from Indian higher education.
  • The event, organized by the Services Export Promotion Council with the support of the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, is being held from 26 April 2023 to 28 April 2023 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai, UAE.

Navratan Status given to Rail Vikas Nigam

  • The Union Finance Ministry granted approval for the promotion of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) from a Category-I Miniratna to a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE).
  • RVNL, which falls under the Ministry of Railways, will become the 13th Navratna CPSE, providing the company with greater independence in investment, joint venture establishment, and other financial decisions.

US State Pennsylvania Declares Diwali as Official Holiday

  • According to a tweet by State Senator Nikil Saval, the US state Pennsylvania has passed a bill to officially recognize Diwali as a holiday.
  • The senator expressed his appreciation to Greg Rothman for allowing him to introduce the bill and informed him that the legislation received unanimous support with a 50-0 vote.
