Ministry of Ayush and ICMR Sign an MoU 

  • A significant development occurred with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Ayush and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) aimed at promoting and collaborating on integrative health research.
  • The objective of this collaboration is to concentrate on specific areas of national importance in healthcare, fostering impactful research that generates evidence using modern scientific methods. Additionally, this MoU will enhance research capabilities by providing training to Ayush researchers.
  • The signing of the MoU involved Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, and Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of the ICMR and Secretary of the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.

Arjun Ram Meghwal Replaces Kiren Rijiju as Law Minister

  • Kiren Rijiju has been replaced as the Union Law Minister and succeeded by Arjun Ram Meghwal, a year before the national election.
  • Mr. Rijiju, widely recognized as one of the government's most prominent ministers and a skilled problem solver, has been reassigned to the relatively less prominent Ministry of Earth Sciences, despite being elevated to the Law Ministry with cabinet status less than a year ago.
  • Arjun Ram Meghwal, previously serving as the Minister of State in charge of Parliamentary Affairs, will now assume the Independent Charge of the Law Ministry. This marks the first instance in recent history where the Law Minister does not hold cabinet rank.
  • Following the announcement of these changes, it was later confirmed that SP Singh Baghel, the former Minister of State in the Law Ministry, will now serve as the junior Health Minister.

PM Modi Launches Railway Projects in Odisha

  • Continuing the efforts to enhance railway infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple railway projects in Odisha on May 18, collectively valued at over Rs 8,000 crore.
  • Additionally, the Prime Minister flagged off the Vande Bharat Express, connecting Puri and Howrah.
  • "In the 'Amrit Kaal' of India, Vande Bharat trains serve as the driving force for the nation's development, while upholding the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat," stated PM Modi.
  • The train's route will traverse through the districts of Khordha, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Balasore in Odisha, as well as Paschim Medinipur and Purba Medinipur in West Bengal.
  • Apart from offering a faster, more comfortable, and convenient travel experience for passengers, the train is expected to stimulate and foster economic growth in the region.

FIFA World Cup 26 Official Brand Unveiled

  • In a historic moment, the emblem for the 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico has introduced an image that features the actual FIFA World Cup trophy and the year of the tournament.
  • This depiction of the trophy and the hosting year offers the opportunity for customization, allowing each host to showcase its unique characteristics while establishing a recognizable brand structure for future editions.
  • The official brand for the 2026 FIFA World Cup was unveiled in Los Angeles, USA, during a special event at the iconic Griffith Observatory.
  • The ceremony brought together FIFA, the host countries (Canada, Mexico, and the USA), football legends, and distinguished guests.
  • FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Ronaldo, the two-time FIFA World Cup winner with Brazil, jointly presented the emblem, marking a significant milestone in the tournament's history.

Prashant Mishra, KV Viswanathan to Take Oath as Supreme Court Judges

  • Today, Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior advocate KV Viswanathan will take the oath as Supreme Court judges following the approval of their appointment by the Central government.
  • The confirmation was announced by the newly appointed Union Law Minister, Arjun Meghwal, on Twitter.
  • The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, recommended Mishra and Viswanathan's names to the government.

Papua New Guinea to Sign Security Pact with US

  • The leader of Papua New Guinea announced on Thursday that the country will enter into a security agreement with the United States.
  • This agreement will grant American troops access to the ports and airports of the Pacific nation, as the United States seeks to assert its influence in the region in competition with Beijing.
  • US President Joe Biden has emphasized the importance of the Pacific region due to concerns about China's growing assertiveness. China has been actively engaging nations in the region by offering various diplomatic and financial incentives in exchange for strategic support.
  • Prime Minister James Marape confirmed that two agreements focusing on defense cooperation and maritime surveillance have been reached with the United States. These agreements will be formally signed as soon as possible after receiving parliamentary approval.

PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates International Museum Expo

  • At the opening ceremony of the International Museum Expo 2023 held at Pragati Maidan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized his administration's dedication to preserving India's rich heritage.
  • He expressed regret that insufficient attention had been given to this cause since Independence.
  • The theme of the expo this year is "museums, sustainability, and well-being."
  • The objective of the event is to facilitate an extensive conversation among museum professionals, enabling them to evolve into cultural hubs that significantly contribute to India's cultural diplomacy.

PM Modi to Inaugurate New Parliament Building on May 28

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the newly-constructed Parliament building on May 28, 2023.
  • Birla met PM Modi and invited him to inaugurate the multi-billion-dollar building, which symbolises ‘self–reliant India’.
  • The new building has been built in record time with quality construction.
