World No Tobacco Day 2023

  • May 31 marks the annual commemoration of World No Tobacco Day, an initiative spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO) aimed at promoting awareness about the detrimental consequences of tobacco usage and advocating for policies to decrease tobacco consumption.
  • The World No Tobacco Day theme for this year is "We need food, not tobacco," with the 2023 global campaign focusing on promoting awareness regarding alternative crop production and marketing possibilities for tobacco farmers.

Angshumali Rastogi Appointed as India's Representative to the Council of ICAO

  • Angshumali Rastogi has been designated as India's representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) council situated in Montreal, Canada.

International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)

  • The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations, established in 1944 to manage the administration and governance of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention).
  • India is one of ICAO’s founder members, having attended the Chicago Convention in 1944, and has since then, been a member of the council of the ICAO, including the Provisional ICAO between 1944 and 1947.
  • India has maintained a permanent delegation at the headquarters of the ICAO in Montreal.

Bola Tinubu Sworn in as the New President of Nigeria

  • Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been elected as the new President of Nigeria.
  • The oath taking ceremony took place at Eagle Square venue in the capital of Nigeria, Abuja.

Equitas SFB Join Hands with IBM to Build Digital Banking Platform

  • Equitas Small Finance Bank has entered into a partnership with IBM Consulting to develop and construct a digital banking platform focused on delivering a secure and seamless experience for customers.
  • The objective of this collaboration is to utilize the partnership with IBM to improve and expand its digital products and services.

M S Ramachandra Rao Sworn in as 28th Chief Justice of Himachal High Court

  • Justice Mamidanna Satya Ratna Sri Ramachandra Rao took the oath of office as the 28th Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
  • In the presence of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla administered the oath of office to Justice Rao at a ceremony held at the Raj Bhawan.

Praveen Kumar Srivastava as the Next CVC

  • Praveen Kumar Srivastava sworn in as the Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Central Vigilance Commission

  • The Central Vigilance Commission was set up by the Government in 1964 on the recommendations of the Committee on Prevention of Corruption, headed by Shri K. Santhanam, to advise and guide Central Government agencies in the field of vigilance.
  • CVC are conceived to be the apex vigilance institution, free of control from any executive authority, monitoring all vigilance activity under the Central Government and advising various authorities in Central Government organizations in planning, executing, reviewing and reforming their vigilant work.
  • The Parliament enacted Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003 (CVC Act) conferring statutory status on the CVC.
  • It is an independent body which is only responsible to Parliament.

14th Clean Energy Ministerial and 8th Mission Innovation meeting in Goa

  • From July 19th to 22nd, 2023, India is scheduled to host the 14th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM-14) and 8th Mission Innovation (MI-8) meeting in Goa.
  • The theme for CEM-14 / MI-8 is "Advancing Clean Energy Together".
