World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2023

  • Every year on May 17th, the world commemorates the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD).
  • This significant day was officially established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1969 to acknowledge the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and raise awareness about the importance of telecommunications and the information society.
  • The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day program for this year focuses on the theme of "Enabling the least developed nations through information and communication technologies."
  • The event is scheduled to be held at the headquarters of the International Telecommunication Union in Geneva, Switzerland.

Shri Bhupender Yadav Launched a Mobile Application, Called ‘Meri LiFE’

  • The mobile application "Meri LiFE" (My life) was launched by Shri Bhupender Yadav, the Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.
  • This app draws inspiration from the concept of LiFE introduced by the Prime Minister during COP 26, promoting conscientious and purposeful utilization instead of thoughtless and excessive consumption.
  • The Prime Minister launched Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) on October 20, 2022, in Kevadia, Gujarat. This initiative aims to promote behaviour changes in individuals by encouraging them to adopt simple and easily achievable actions.
  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is responsible for coordinating and implementing Mission LiFE at the national level.

Punjab's Traditional Martial Art, Gatka, to Feature in 2023 National Games

  • Gatka, a traditional game, is about to experience significant growth at the national level as it has been officially included in the 37th National Games-2023. The event is scheduled to be held in Goa in October of this year.
  • The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), in collaboration with the Government of Goa, will organize competitions for a total of 43 disciplines during this prestigious national event.

Kerala Government Launched a Welfare Fund for Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS)

  • The Kerala government launched a welfare fund exclusively for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) workers, marking the first-of-its-kind initiative in the country.
  • As part of the initiative, workers who have attained the age of 60 will be eligible for a pension, and the fund will also offer financial support for various purposes such as medical treatment, education, and marriage, among other benefits. The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, inaugurated the program.

India and Bangladesh Have Jointly Launched the "50 Start-Ups Exchange Programme

  • The initial batch of 10 startup companies participating in the 50 Start-ups Exchange Programme between India and Bangladesh has successfully concluded their five-day visit to India, returning to Dhaka.
  • These startups represent a diverse range of sectors including e-commerce, health, transport and logistics, energy, education, and skill development.
  • The programme aims to facilitate collaboration, knowledge sharing, and business expansion between 50 startups from Bangladesh and 50 startups from India. It provides opportunities for partnerships, exchanging experiences and knowledge, and fostering youth and entrepreneurial cooperation.
  • The framework for this program was established during recent bilateral summits between the Prime Ministers of both countries.

Inauguration of 8th All India Pension Adalat in Delhi

  • Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, will inaugurate the 8th All India Pension Adalat in Delhi today.
  • This event will focus on resolving chronic pension-related cases.
  • The Department has previously organized seven such adalats, addressing 24,218 cases and successfully resolving 17,235 cases.
  • To align with the government's goals of transparency, digitization, and efficient service delivery, the department has introduced the Bhavishya platform. This platform ensures end-to-end digitization of pension processing and payment, further streamlining the process.

National Dengue Day 2023

  • Every year on May 16th, National Dengue Day is observed to raise awareness and promote preventive measures against dengue.
  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has formally declared this annual observance, aiming to educate the public about the disease and its prevention. The theme for this year's National Dengue Day is "Fight Dengue, Save Lives."

Paytm Appoints Bhavesh Gupta as President and COO

  • Bhavesh Gupta has been appointed as the President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Paytm's parent company, One 97 Communications Ltd. Gupta, who previously held the position of Senior Vice President, will now assume the role of overseeing multiple sectors within Paytm.
  • This includes lending, insurance, online and offline payments, consumer payments, as well as leading significant initiatives such as user growth, operational risk management, fraud risk management, and compliance. Gupta will report directly to Paytm's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Vijay Shekhar Sharma.
