International Day of Plant Health 2023

  • May 12th is recognized by the United Nations as the International Day of Plant Health (IDPH) with the aim to increase worldwide recognition of the importance of safeguarding plant health.
  • This initiative is intended to combat hunger, diminish poverty, preserve biodiversity and the environment, and promote economic growth. The International Year of Plant Health in 2020 played a pivotal role in establishing this day as a significant legacy.

Ministry of Ayush and ICMR Collaborates to Promote Integrative Health Research

  • The Ministry of Ayush and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote and collaborate on integrative health research.
  • The agreement aims to focus on identified areas of national significance in healthcare, with a view to promoting high-impact research that utilizes modern scientific methods to generate evidence.

Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Startup Forum 2023

  • In New Delhi, India recently hosted the third edition of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Startup Forum, which was the first-ever physical event of its kind.
  • The Department of Promotion for Industry and Internal Trade under the Ministry of Commerce organized the event through Startup India.
  • The forum aimed to foster interactions among startups in SCO Member States, promote innovation, generate employment, and build talent.

Prime Minister Launched Development Projects Costing Over Rs 5,500 Crore in Rajasthan

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated development projects worth more than Rs 5,500 crore in Rajasthan. The Prime Minister dedicated and laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects in Nathdwara, Rajasthan.
  • The construction of a national highway will bring benefits to the Udaipur-Dungarpur and Banswara regions, while improving access to the border through the Bilara and Jodhpur sections. Furthermore, travel time between Jaipur and Jodhpur is expected to be reduced by three hours upon completion.

Unnati Subsidiary Ora Finance Has Been Awarded a License to Operate An NBFC

  • Unnati, an AgriTech company, announced that its subsidiary, Ora Finance, has received a license to operate as an NBFC.
  • Ora Finance is now equipped to provide financial services to different stakeholders in the agricultural ecosystem while striving to address the gaps in agri-financing that currently exist.
  • Unnati has a network of over 100,000 registered retailers and traders who utilize its uStore application to connect with farmers and oversee their agribusiness operations daily.
  • Through its applications, these partners engage with more than 1.3 million farmers. With a focus on innovation and data analysis, the company has supported all aspects of product procurement, crop cultivation, production, and sales, ultimately assisting farmers in enhancing their yields and profits, according to the agri-fintech firm.

National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited Has Appointed Rajiv Dhar as Interim CEO & MD

  • As of May 11, 2023, Rajiv Dhar, the Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer of National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited (NIIFL), has been appointed as the interim Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of NIIFL.
  • The decision to appoint an interim CEO and Managing Director follows Sujoy Bose's request to be relieved of his current responsibilities as the Managing Director and CEO, a position he had held since 2016 in the company.

WHO Has Announced the Conclusion of the Public Health Emergency Concerning Smallpox

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the conclusion of a 10-month-long global health emergency for smallpox, a viral disease that affected over 100 countries.
  • The WHO had designated smallpox as a public health emergency of international concern in July 2022, and its position was reaffirmed in November and February.
  • Based on the recommendation of the emergency committee, the Director-General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced the conclusion of the emergency status for smallpox.
