International Day of Argania 2023

  • On May 10th each year, the International Day of Argania is commemorated to raise awareness about the ecological and economic significance of the Argania tree, which is indigenous to Morocco.
  • The tree is recognized for its ability to thrive in extreme conditions, providing a variety of benefits to both the environment and the people.

Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Launched Phase-III of Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana

  • To celebrate World Thalassemia Day, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, launched the third phase of the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY) program, which is supported by Coal India Limited as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
  • Additionally, the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana Portal was also launched during the event. Shri Rajesh Bhushan, Union Health Secretary, Shri Anil Kumar Jha, Secretary, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, and Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, Department of Health Research, were among those present at the launch.

Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana

  • Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder that leads to lower-than-normal levels of haemoglobin in the body. The TBSY program, initiated by the Union Health Ministry under the National Health Mission (NHM) in 2017, recently concluded its second phase in March 2023.
  • As part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, Coal India has funded a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) program, which provides a chance for a permanent cure for underprivileged Thalassemia patients who have a compatible sibling donor but lack the financial means to pay for the procedure.
  • So far, this unique initiative has facilitated 356 bone marrow transplants for Thalassemia patients in 10 designated hospitals across India during the previous two phases.

India Post Has Signed a MoU with CAIT and Tripta Technologies for Logistics Services

  • India Post has entered into an agreement with Tripta Technologies and the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) to provide logistics services.
  • This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will enable small and medium-sized traders to use India Post for shipping and last-mile delivery services across the country.
  • The partnership aims to extend shipping and delivery services to CAIT's wide network of traders and small and medium-sized businesses in the unorganised sector. By expanding e-commerce services to rural areas and small towns, the MoU is expected to benefit a significant number of traders.

RBI Has Increased its Gold Reserves by 4.5% to 794.64 Metric Tonnes in 2022-2023

  • During the fiscal year that concluded on March 31, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) augmented its gold holdings by 34.22 metric tonnes, resulting in a total of 794.64 metric tonnes of gold reserves.
  • As of March 31, 2022, the RBI held 760.42 metric tonnes of gold, up from 695.31 metric tonnes as of March 31, 2021.

The Inauguration of the Sittwe Port in Myanmar was Carried Out by Sarbananda Sonowal

  • The Sittwe Port in Myanmar was jointly inaugurated by Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and AYUSH, and Admiral Tin Aung San, the Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Transport & Communications of Myanmar.
  • The ceremony also marked the arrival of the first Indian cargo ship, which was dispatched from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata.
  • The Sittwe Port will offer an alternate means of connectivity between Mizoram and Haldia in West Bengal, or any other Indian port, via the Kaladan river in Myanmar.
  • The Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP), which is financed by grant-in-aid assistance from the Indian government, involves road transport from Mizoram to Paletwa in Myanmar, followed by inland water transport from Paletwa to Sittwe in Myanmar, and maritime shipping from Sittwe to any Indian port.
  • Upon full implementation, the waterway and road components of the KMTTP will link the East coast of India with the North-eastern states through the Sittwe port.

Rebranding of PAYBACK India as ‘Zillion’

  • BharatPe Group, a fintech startup, revealed that it has renamed its loyalty program PAYBACK India to Zillion.
  • The company stated that the updated branding intends to attract customers of all ages and enhance their shopping experience across various brands and categories.
  • The Zillion logo embodies the concept of discovering moments of joy and spark everywhere. Through the network of online and offline partners, such as fuel stations, groceries, entertainment, apparel, and travel, customers will be able to accumulate Zillion coins.
  • Zillion has partnered with a diverse range of brands from various industries, including banking, payments, retail fuel, entertainment, hospitality, and travel. Key partners of the loyalty program include Amazon, American Express, BookMyShow, Flipkart, HPCL, and many others.

Cashfree Payments and YES Bank Have Joined Hands to Launch 'Global Collections'

  • Yes Bank and Cashfree Payments have joined hands to introduce 'Global Collections,' an international collection service designed for exporters who are account holders of Yes Bank.
  • Through this collaboration, the bank's account holders can use the Global Collections service to collect payments in more than 30 foreign currencies.
  • The received funds can then be converted into INR and deposited into their local bank account in India within one business day.

Lionel Messi Wins Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award

  • At the 2023 Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony held in Paris, Lionel Messi was honoured with the title of Sportsman of the Year.
  • The Argentine footballer was recognized for his exceptional performance on the field over the past year, which included leading his team to triumph in the FIFA World Cup.
  • With the win, the Argentine becomes the only footballer ever to win Laureus Awards twice. Messi previously won the Sportsman of the Year award in 2020 in a ceremony that took place in Berlin.

India Has Decided to Extend the $1 Billion Credit Line for Sri Lanka

  • Amid an economic crisis, India has granted a one-year extension to the $1 billion credit line provided to Sri Lanka, thereby providing the cash-strapped nation with backup funds for essential imports.
  • The credit line was part of the $4 billion emergency assistance package offered by India during the height of Sri Lanka's financial crisis in early 2022 and was originally set to expire in March.

Petersberg Climate Dialogue 2023

  • The Petersberg Climate Dialogue, an annual forum for high-level international climate talks that precedes the United Nations Climate Change Conferences (COP), was hosted by Germany and the United Arab Emirates from May 2-3, 2023, in Berlin.
  • The conference was attended by representatives from over 30 countries and international organizations, including the United Nations Secretary-General, the President of COP28, and the German Foreign Minister.
  • The purpose of this year's dialogue was to discuss and exchange ideas on global climate action in preparation for the upcoming COP28 conference, which will be held in the UAE.
