Why in News? 

According to Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2024, India ranks 96th out of 180 countries, scoring 38 points. 

  • The CPI measures countries' perceived levels of public sector corruption on a scale from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). 

Global and Regional Rankings 

  • Denmark ranks 1st as the least corrupt country, followed by Finland (2nd) and Singapore (3rd). 
  • Among the most corrupt nations are South Sudan, Somalia, Venezuela, and Syria. 

Corruption and Climate Action 

  • Corruption poses a serious threat to climate initiatives, hindering emission reductions and adaptation efforts. 
  • Misappropriation of climate funds worsens the effects of global warming. 
  • Bribery and undue influence obstruct policies aimed at environmental protection. 

 Corruption Trends Over Time 

  • Since 2012, corruption levels have decreased in 32 countries. 
  • However, 148 nations have either stagnated or worsened in tackling corruption. 
  • The global average CPI score remains at 43, showing limited progress. 
  • Over two-thirds of countries score below 50, highlighting widespread corruption issues.
