Why in News?
According to Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2024, India ranks 96th out of 180 countries, scoring 38 points.
- The CPI measures countries' perceived levels of public sector corruption on a scale from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
Global and Regional Rankings
- Denmark ranks 1st as the least corrupt country, followed by Finland (2nd) and Singapore (3rd).
- Among the most corrupt nations are South Sudan, Somalia, Venezuela, and Syria.

- Corruption poses a serious threat to climate initiatives, hindering emission reductions and adaptation efforts.
- Misappropriation of climate funds worsens the effects of global warming.

Corruption Trends Over Time
- Since 2012, corruption levels have decreased in 32 countries.
- However, 148 nations have either stagnated or worsened in tackling corruption.
- The global average CPI score remains at 43, showing limited progress.
- Over two-thirds of countries score below 50, highlighting widespread corruption issues.
