Renowned Indian ecologist Madhav Gadgil has been awarded the prestigious Champions of the Earth award. It is the United Nations' highest environmental accolade, emphasizing efforts toward sustainability and climate action.

About Madhav Gadgill

  • Mr. Gadgil chaired the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel.
    • The panel recommended in 2011 that the region be designated an Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) with zone-specific regulations.
  • He is the only Indian among the awardees this year, showcasing his global impact on biodiversity conservation.

What is an Eco sensitive Zone?

  • Ecologically Sensitive Zones (ESZs) are regions near protected areas like wildlife sanctuaries or national parks, marked for restricted development to conserve biodiversity.
  • These zones act as buffer areas to minimize the impact of human activities on fragile ecosystems.
  • Activities such as mining, large-scale construction, and industrial projects are either prohibited or strictly regulated within ESZs.
