Central Government Hikes Minimum Wage Rates, Effective From 1st October

Why in the News?

On 26th September 2024, the Central Government announced an increase in minimum wage rates for workers in Agriculture sector, raising them to as much as Rs. 1,035 per day through a revision of the variable dearness allowance. According to a statement from the labour ministry, this change is intended to assist workers in managing the rising cost of living.

  • Minimum wage categories: Unskilled, Semi-skilled, Skilled, highly skilled
  • Geographical areas: A, B and C
  • Area 'A' wage rates (after revision):
    • Unskilled: Rs. 783 per day
    • Semi-skilled: Rs. 868 per day
    • Skilled/Clerical/Watch & ward (without arms): Rs. 954 per day
    • Highly skilled/Watch & ward (with arms): Rs. 1,035 per day
