About
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is an executive force responsible for road construction in India, primarily supporting the Indian Armed Forces. It functions under the Ministry of Defence.
- Established: 7 May 1960 to enhance border security and develop infrastructure in remote areas.
- Operations: Develops and maintains roads in border areas and friendly neighboring countries (Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka).
- Presence: Works across 19 states and 3 UTs, including Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
- Infrastructure Projects: Constructs roads, bridges, airfields, tunnels, townships, and hydroelectric projects.
- Governance: Border Roads Development Board (BRDB) – PM as Chairman, Defence Minister as Deputy Chairman.
- Personnel: Officers from General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) and Indian Army’s Corps of Engineers (on deputation).
- Strategic Role: Part of Order of Battle of the Armed Forces, supporting military operations in emergencies.
- Key Contribution: Atal Tunnel – World’s longest highway tunnel (9.02 km).
- Motto: Shramena Sarvam Sadhyam – Everything is achievable through hard work.
