Why in the News?  

Recently Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, said that India will have its own space station, ‘Bharat Antariksha Station,’ by 2035, while an Indian will land on the moon by 2040.   

About BAS 

  • It is India's proposed space station, part of the Indian Space Vision 2047. 
  • Timeline: 
    • The first module is planned to be launched by 2028. 
    • Fully operational station targeted by 2035. 
  • Purpose: 

  • Serve as a space habitat for Indian astronauts. 
  • Support scientific experiments and technology development in space. 
  • Lunar Connection: A precursor to India's lunar manned mission by 2040. 
  • Significance: 
    • Marks India's foray into permanent space exploration infrastructure. 
    • Will enhance India’s self-reliance in advanced space technologies and long-term human spaceflight missions. 
  • Development Challenge: 
    • Building space habitats and modules is a completely new domain for ISRO. 
    • Requires advancements in space transportation systems and habitation technologies.
