Why in News?
India has taken over the chairmanship of the Bay of Bengal Inter-Governmental Organisation from Bangladesh during the 13th Governing Council Meeting held in Malé, Maldives.
About
- Established in 2003, it is a specialized regional fisheries body focused on enhancing livelihood opportunities and improving the quality of life for small-scale/artisanal fisherfolk in the Bay of Bengal region.
- The organisation evolved from the former Bay of Bengal Programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, initiated in 1979.
- It has set international standards in implementing programs that have delivered measurable benefits to its member countries in the small-scale fisheries sector.
Member Countries
- Bangladesh, India, Maldives, and Sri Lanka are full members.
- Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand participate as cooperating non-contracting parties.
Objectives
- Promote awareness and knowledge on sustainable marine fisheries management.
- Enhance skills through training, education, and the transfer of relevant technologies for small-scale fisheries.
- Establish regional information networks and encourage women’s participation in the marine fisheries value chain.
